Poppy Sunset

Ever since I painted my first poppies back in the summer of 2020 (see Poppy Field), I wanted to return to the subject and have another go. :)

And given that I am fed up of the English winter, I came back to the poppies now to cheer and warm me up :).

​

This time, I gave the sky a lot more real estate, allowing me to a add a good dose of drama to the painting. And in order to allow me to to really explore varied light on the poppies, I painted them at sunset. This way, I could get that burst of warm evening light on one part, while keeping the rest more cool and in tune with the clouds.

It was so fun to use impasto on poppies again. I think I managed to be a lot more purposeful and subtle with it this time - I hope you like it :) (because I suspect I'll be back to poppies again before long!).

Materials: High-quality Old Holland oil pigments, Winsor & Newton Oil Color Medium, and a Cotton Deep Edge Canvas.
